In the following sections, we’ll help you get started completing your financial aid applications. Even if your family situation or immigration status is complicated, you may still be eligible for financial aid.

My family situation is complicated


The FAFSA asks you to enter your parents’ financial information. If you are unsure, this video can help you decide who to list as your parents for financial aid purposes. If at all possible, try to get them to share their tax information with you for the FAFSA. If you aren’t in contact with your parents, talk to a guidance counselor at your school or your college’s financial aid office. They may be able to declare you independent for financial aid purposes.Just make sure you submit the FAFSA by March 2nd!

I’m in the foster system

Don’t worry, foster youth can still qualify for financial aid! In fact, you may qualify for extra free money called the CHAFEE grant, which is available only for foster youth. We’ll help you learn more about the options available to you in the next few steps.Just make sure you fill out the FAFSA by March 2nd!

My family is undocumented

Don’t worry, undocumented students can still qualify for financial aid through California’s DREAM Act. We’ll give you more information about this as you go through the application process on the following pages.

I’m renewing my financial aid applications

Renewing your financial aid applications is easier than doing it the first time. When you log in with your FSA ID, most of the information will already be filled out. You’ll just need to verify that all your personal information is the same, and then update your tax information for this year. If you have already filed your taxes, you can import that information directly from the IRS website!
